your Furniture Inventory List

How to Prepare Your Furniture Inventory List

A simple guide to help us design your home with accuracy and ease

Creating a Furniture Inventory List before we begin the design process helps us:

  • Make the most of what you already own
  • Plan accurate layouts
  • Avoid surprises later on (like a favourite piece not fitting where you’d hoped)

This guide walks you through exactly what to include and how to pull it all together, step by step.

1. Gather Everything Into One Place

Start by walking through each room and noting down the furniture you currently own. Don’t worry about it being perfect — this is just about capturing what you have.

Think about:

  • Large items – sofas, beds, wardrobes, dining tables
  • Storage pieces – chests, sideboards, benches, console tables
  • Accent pieces – armchairs, stools, occasional tables
  • Bedroom furniture – bedside tables, tallboys, dressing tables
  • Outdoor pieces (if relevant) – dining sets, loungers, benches
  • Sentimental or non-negotiable items you definitely want included

Tip: If you’re unsure whether to keep an item, still list it — we can decide together during the design process.

2. Measure Each Item

Accurate measurements are essential for designing layouts that actually fit and flow well.

For each item, please measure:

  • Width – left to right
  • Depth – front to back
  • Height – floor to top
  • Any overhangs – for example arms on sofas, curved backs, or tops that stick out

Use a tape measure and round to the nearest centimetre. Don’t worry if it’s not exact to the millimetre — close and consistent is perfect.

3. Take a Clear Photo of Each Piece

Photos help me quickly understand the style, finish, and condition of each item, and how it might work in the new design.

For each piece, please include:

  • A front view
  • A side view (if useful for understanding depth/shape)
  • Close-ups of texture or finish (optional)

Mobile phone photos are absolutely fine — no need for anything professional.

4. Add Any Notes or Details

This is where you can share how you feel about each piece and how flexible you are with it. Helpful details include:

  • Whether you want to keepreplace, or are unsure
  • If an item has sentimental value
  • Whether you’d be happy to paintreupholster, or modify it
  • If it’s due to be moved to another room
  • Any condition issues – worn legs, stiff drawers, scratches, sagging cushions, etc.

These notes help me decide what to feature, what to hide, and where we might save money by reworking pieces rather than replacing them.

5. Use the Template Below

You can share your inventory in whatever format is easiest for you – your Notes app, a Word or Google document, an email, or even WhatsApp messages.

Here’s a simple structure you can copy and paste:

7. Send It to Me When You’re Ready

Once your list is complete, simply send it over via email or WhatsApp – whatever is easiest.

From there, I will:

  • Incorporate your existing furniture into the layout and floor plan
  • Highlight where replacements or upgrades might be helpful
  • Identify pieces we can repurpose to save you money
  • Make sure everything fits perfectly and supports the overall design direction

This simple bit of prep work means we can design with confidence, respect the pieces you love, and create a home that feels considered, cohesive, and uniquely yours.
